'Help me!': request written on paper helps rescue a kidnapped 13-year-old girl in the US

A distress call written on a piece of paper helped US rescuers find a kidnapped 13-year-old girl in Texas.

It all started when on the morning of July 9, kidnapper Steven Robert Sablan (61) parked his car in Long Beach to take clothes to a laundromat.

While Sablan was at the store, the victim stayed in the car and wrote, in red letters, on a piece of paper, the expression "Help me", which means "Help me!" in Portuguese.

A person who saw the note called the police, who, when they arrived, saw Sablan standing outside the vehicle, in addition to the victim muttering “help”. That's what documents from the US Department of Justice claim.

During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered a gun, the girl's license plate and a pair of handcuffs. Police determined that the victim was a missing girl from San Antonio.

Steven Robert Sablan now faces charges of kidnapping and transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. His arraignment is scheduled for July 31 in the United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles.

If convicted of both counts, Sablan will face a maximum sentence of life in federal prison.
