Worldcoin is official. There is a new cryptocurrency on the market

The Worldcoin project was born three years ago and today a new cryptocurrency is officially launched to the world. Sam Altman from OpenAI is one of the people behind this new cryptocurrency, which already has Portuguese investment.

It was through an official announcement signed by Alex Blania and Sam Altman that a new digital currency, Worldcoin, was launched.

Worldcoin consists of a privacy-preserving digital identity (World ID) and, where laws permit, a digital currency (WLD) received simply by humans.

According to the creators, "If successful, we believe that Worldcoin can dramatically increase economic opportunity, scale a credible solution to distinguish humans from AI online while preserving privacy, enable global democratic processes, and eventually show a potential path to AI-funded UBI."

In order to register with Worldcoin, users must allow the scanning of the irises of the eyes in a mirrored sphere, created by Thomas Meyerhoffer, a former Apple designer, the Orbe.

The project already has 2 million users registered in its beta phase and Worldcoin is expanding “orbital” operations to 35 cities in 20 countries. As a temptation, those who apply in certain countries will receive Worldcoin's WLD cryptocurrency token. Data provided by the company indicate that there are more than four million Worldcoin units in the digital wallets of 170,000 Portuguese users.

Worldcoin owns about 20% of all its tokens, which are not launching in the US for now. In the first 15 years, the startup is limiting the total supply to 10 billion “WLD” tokens. At launch on Monday, the token's maximum circulation supply, based on the ERC-20, is 143 million, writes Worldcoin in a whitepaper.

Reuters quotes Alex Blania as indicating that the cryptocurrency aspect of World IDs is important because cryptocurrency blockchains can store World IDs in a way that preserves privacy and cannot be controlled or deactivated by any entity.
